Top 5 Beaches in the Vendee
Famous for its coastline, here is our pick of the Top 5 beaches in the Vendee – all of which are no more than a 30 minute drive
5. Plage du Veillon, Talmont St Hilaire
The Plage du Veillon at Talmont is ideal if you love spending a whole day at the beach. With a cafe, surf school, and mini golf (!), the beach also has large pools of shallow water to play in, it also forms part of the Jurassic coast- where dinosaur bones can still be found.Walk along the coastal path to the harbour for more restaurants and shops or drive in to Talmont itself and visit Richard the Lion hearts castle.
4. Plage de Sauveterre, Olonne sur Mer
Situated in the clearing of an ancient pine forest, the beach of Sauveterre is all you’d expect of a Vendee beach, with protected dunes, rock pools and waves surfers dream of.From the beach of Sauveterre cycle along the coastal route to the port of La Chaume and catch a water bus for a couple of euros to Les Sables d’Olonne.
3. Paracou beach in La Chaume is another all day beach
Situated just along the coast from La Chaume it offers panoramic vistas, with soft sands, sand dunes and rock pools. In high season the beach has lifeguards, and it’s the perfect spot to wander in to La Chaume for food and drinks, or to catch the water bus in to Les Sables d’Olonne.
2. The Corniche, Saint Gilles croix de Vie
(my absolute fave place, in case you haven’t noticed!)
Once you drive though the centre of Saint Gilles past the train station you’ll find an expanse of beaches, rock pools, and beachside bars
There are also several natural swimming pools that fill with sea water, and provide a safe swimming area for little ones and those not confident in the sea
1. The Grande Plage, Les Sables d’Olonne
Our list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Les Sables d’Olonne.
A surfing and sailing paradise with long flat sands, and Atlantic waves.
Summer evenings are an ideal time to come down and enjoy the last of the sun rays and see the promenade come alive with musicians, artists and performers.
Because a short list of beaches wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the strip of beaches between Bretignolles and Brem- sur-Mer.
Why? Well look at those brochure worthy views!Situated only a 15 minute drive from the Chateau it’s easy to spend a whole day playing in the sand, or head down on an evening to enjoy the last of the sunny rays.
